M5 laser sensor

The traditional method to determin the hematocrit is labour intensive and involves expensive laboratory equipment.

The M5 distance sensor introduces a faster and more effective way to measure the hematocrit by analizing the reflection of the intensity signal. For the interpretation of the value, only a digital voltmeter is necessary.

The laser beam is conducted from transparent bottom into the cuvette. The value of the intensity signal alters with the change of blood density. A direct correlation between the intensity signal and the blood density could be proved.
Technical background

The laser light is largely scattered by the red blood cells. A large portion of the light will be absorbed by the cells and with increased densitiy a reduction in light reflection can be noticed. At the same time, the transparency of the blood serum causes an irregular penetration of the laser light; therefore the distance signals are not evaluable, but the intensity signal is readable.

A reprocuction of this trial with other liquids surprisingly showed, that with the manner of intensity signal many measuring problems can be solved.

The M5 sensor is the predecessor of the now available M7 distance sensor. With an increased sampling frequency of 54 kHz measurings of fast moving objects can be made.
